How to Get Rid of Razor Bumps

We asked a few people how to How to Get Rid of Razor Bumps and this is their answer.

1. Desiree Oxendine, Esthetician

I don't use old razor blades and I always use proper care when I'm actually using a blade. Prep your skin by allowing some steam from the shower, or even steam from a steamer if you want. The steam helps to soften the hair follicle, making it easier to extract the hair, which in turn helps to aid in the prevention of bumps. Then you want to use and exfoliating cleanser on the area. Make sure you rinse well. Use a gentle cleanser to clean the area and make sure to rinse well. Step away from running water, use a moisturizing shave cream. Something that is more like a lotion rather than a shaving mousse.

For every stroke of hair removed be sure to clean the blade off so you have a fresh blade clean of any hairs for the next stroke. Do this until finished. When you have removed all the hair you want gone, go ahead and rinse off the area with Luke warm water making sure you get all excessive products and hair from the area. Don't rub the area at all, let it air dry or Pat lightly to dry. Apply some moisturizer that has lasting moisturizer properties bit won't clog pores.

  1. Prep and cleanse
  2. Exfoliate
  3. Steam or wait til 3nd of shower to shave since the warm water will soften the hair follicle making it easier to extract hairs by pulling less on the hairs
  4. Use a shaving oil instead of shaving mousse. The moisturizing properties are so much better for you skin and less harsh when shaving
  5. Pat dry or air dry do not scrub or rub the area

To expand on Harleigh’s great advice, how you treat your skin afterwards is very important. Make sure to wear non-tight clothes as things like super tight underwear can actually prevent the hair from coming in straight and then you’re dealing with fun stuff like ingrowns and you’ll never want to shave again.

Personally, I use a product called Penchant Bare which you can get on Amazon. You put it on dry skin right after you shave in the shower and it’ll protect from ingrowns and razor bumps which will end any of the sexiness of a shaved bikini area. I put it on a couple times a day until the hair starts fully growing back and poof, you’re good to go and can admire that fine work you did for days to come.

First off always use a new razor that way the hair is not being pulled it’s being cut quickly. Next use a good shaving balm instead of cheap shaving cream. You want as little resistance as possible while the razor goes across it plus if you don’t shave about every other day at least you will have problems with getting razor bumps. Now it does get better with time as the shin and hair toughens up and gets use to it. I shave everyday. But never any bumps. But I’ve also had a Brazilian wax job done also.

Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before beginning. Wash and dry the area before beginning.

Antiseptic soap, warm water, new blade drawn in the same direction as hair growth in short strokes- no pressure, hot water to rinse the blade, rinse area with tepid water, thorough drying (hair blower on low and cool - make sure you get the folds), all done before bed and don't wear panties overnight.

If you must shave the hair, ALWAYS shave in the direction the hair is growing in. Start by soaking in a warm bath the relax the muscles and hair follicles. After a few minutes of soaking, start by trimming the longer hairs as close to the area as possible. Long hair dulls the razor faster. Then once the hair has been trimmed, apply a shaving cream to the area. For this region of the body, I would recommend EOS brand shaving cream since it is silly like lotion. Begin to lightly glide the razor away from the skin in the direction of the growth of the hair. On the outer parts, you will want to be more careful. Be gentle in those delicate areas. Once all the hair has been shaved, clean off the razor and place where you shaved and apply an aftershave. You may be itchy for a few days or weeks.

Personally, I use depilatory creams since they are easier and last longer.

The choice is up to you.
