How Long Does Hair Grow in One Week?

Hair growth is genetically pre-determined by your father’s mother and mother’s father.

Most humans grow hair, if you are in good health, your hair hasn’t been trashed by too much bleach, chemicals or similar and you are eating relatively healthy, sleeping, drinking enough water and not abusing alcohol, recreational drugs, caffeine or similar at the rate of 1/2 inch per month or 1/4 inch every two weeks or 1/8 of an inch per week.

Yes, there are exceptions to every rule, but generally speaking:

  1. All human hair growth rates are genetically predetermined.
  2. There are four unique and scientifically proven growth cycles. The anagen growth cycle lasts 2–7 years depending upon genetics as well as health and lifestyle.
  3. Hair tends to have a maximum terminal length it will grow to based on your genetics as well as your lifestyle and how well you are able to retain the length you are able to grow.

If you want hair growth of more than 1/2th inch of hair per month do the following:

Unfortunately there is a tremendous about of fake hair news out in the world and the media. I’ve been studying hair for over 30+ years. I’ve gone to two cosmetology colleges, taken tons of hair related course in every imaginable topic from color to extensions to scalp diseases.

I also have hair to my hips and have had consistently very long hair since the late 1980s. I have the photos to prove it and legions of living witnesses. When it comes to hair, there’s very little I don’t know about and I’m willing to share.

Please make note of the follow fake news about hair:

1. No oil applied to your scalp or hair will impact it’s growth.

It doesn’t matter if it’s coconut oil which has been proven to be able to cross the barrier into the cortex. It doesn’t grow hair.

Ditto with aloe vera gel, onion juice or rubbing 1/2 onion on your scalp. The same is true of red pepper. Nope. Sorry. It doesn’t work.

Have I tried it? Of course I have. How can I write about it if I haven’t tried it.

Some essential oils such as basil or peppermint mixed with jojoba oil and applied as part of a scalp massage may work to slow hair loss, but it has not been proven to accelerate hair growth.

Yes, it may help with regrowth if you lost hair due to telogen effluvien, but it will not grow hair at an accelerated rate.

2. None of the list of oils suggested by legions of Do-It-Yourself (DIY) hair gurus helpful for hair growth and they will not help grow hair beyond your genetically pre-determined rates.

Some of the seed oils will actually clog the pores of the scalp and slow down natural growth. Also, studies have shown that some seed oils which are applied to the scalp and the hair are generally not healthy for the human body.

Bottom line? Step away from the oils. All of them. Coconut included.

3. If you really want to use oil on your hair, use 1–2 drops to seal the ends to protect them from shredding and to encourage length retention.

Or you can use a few drops to massage a dry scalp, making sure not to use fingernails or sharp items which can leave tiny microscopic cuts on the surface.

However, a little bit means 1–2 drops massaged into the palms of your hands and fingertips. A little bit goes a long way and doesn’t clog the pores of the scalp, the roots or the follicles.

-------------

4. The scalp needs to be clean to avoid the development of fungus or other conditions which occur from the build-up of styling products, dry shampoo residue, powers and natural environmental dirt and toxins.

If you slather coconut or other oils on your scalp, you are actually adding to the build-up problem on the scalp.

To repeat myself…..

Please, step away from the oils other than to seal ends or add a little for scalp massage or to add a tiny bit of hydration to a dry scalp.

Some people, especially people of certain races do have a tendency to have dry scalp and a little bit of oil will help.

But a little bit of oil to moisturize a dry scalp will not make hair grow any faster than it is genetically pre-determined to grow.

-------------

5. Hanging upside down does encourage blood circulation to the scalp, roots and follicles. It does not cause you to grow 1 or more inches overnight.

-------------

6. Applying over-the-counter yeast creams designed for yeast infections may help a scalp which has a fungal condition, but it will not grow hair overnight or even accelerate a genetically pre-determined hair growth rate.

If You Want To Try DIY Treatments For Your Own Interest That’s Fine, Just Know The Most Likely Results So You Aren’t Disappointed

If you want to try a variety of DIY hair remedies with the hope of accelerated hair growth, I understand. I have tried them all myself and none of them worked for me to change how fast my hair grew.

What did work for me was eating hair healthy foods, exercising, drinking plenty of water, getting good sleep and avoiding excessive consumption of alcohol or other known hair growth inhibitors.

Even when my hair is growing at its optimal rate, it has never grown faster than 1/2 inches. My hair does seem to grow a tiny bit faster in warmer weather, but overall, I average 6″ of new hair growth per year.

Yes, Crystal Gayle grows her hair much faster, but she is the exception to the rule.

For me, my biggest challenge is length retention because the longer my hair grows, the easier it is for the ends to shred off if I don’t take extra care to protect them.

How long does a hair grow in one week? If you are an average human your hair will most likely grow approximately 1/8th of an inch per week. Yes, there are exceptions to the rule, but if you are doing everything right and are in an optimal anagen growth cycle, that is how much hair you can expect to grow.

Best wishes to all.
